The Glass Dome – Limited Series

Available April 15 On Netflix

The streaming world has been a great place to introduce audiences to more international television, with crime series from other countries proving to be of particular interest. The latest popular series of this kind could be the Swedish crime thriller The Glass Dome. The show follows a criminologist who is brought in to help with the disappearance of a young girl, which brings the investigator back to the small town where she was held captive as a child.

The dark subject matter will certainly turn off a lot of viewers, but it is a must-see for fans of the genre.

The show is an intense and gripping thriller of a race against time to solve this harrowing kidnapping case. However, it is also a psychological thriller that explores the lasting impact of trauma. The dark subject matter will certainly turn off a lot of viewers, but it is a must-see for fans of the genre. All six episodes of The Glass Dome dropped on Netflix on April 15.

Murder-mystery fans will be thrilled to find the newest BritBox release, which also delivers the latest Agatha Christie adaptation to the small screen. Towards Zero follows the classic Christie set up with a group of people gathered together in an isolated mansion, only for a murder to occur and turn all of them into suspects. In this case, the story revolves around a recently divorced British tennis player who spends a holiday at his wealthy aunt’s estate with various relatives and acquaintances among the guests.

As is also typical with these kinds of stories, Towards Zero assembles a terrific ensemble to play these eclectic characters, including Anjelica Huston, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Mimi Keene, and Matthew Rhys. While it may not change the format too much from Christie’s stories, these mysteries have remained beloved for a reason. The three-episode miniseries began airing on BritBox on April 16.

The latest Netflix drama Ransom Canyon blends a couple of interesting genre elements together into a show that could appeal to a lot of people. Based on the novel series by Jodi Thomas, Ransom Canyon is set in a rural Texas community where three families of ranchers fight to maintain what their families have built, putting them in bitter and even dangerous conflicts with one another.

While that premise might sound more like a Yellowstone spinoff, Ransom Canyon actually has more in common with the Netflix romance drama series Virgin River. Josh Duhamel gets to take on the rugged romantic lead as a troubled man from Ransom Canyon who returns years later and finds himself chasing the girl he left behind, played by Friday Night Lights star Minka Kelly. All 10 episodes of the first season landed on Netflix on April 17.

Government Cheese – New Series

Available April 16 On Apple TV+

Following his acclaimed leading role in Lawmen: Bass Reeves, David Oyelowo returns to television with a new period comedy series. Government Cheese is set in California in 1969 and finds Oyelowo playing Hampton Chambers, a convicted burglar who is released from prison and returns home to his family. Wanting to set things right and start a new path, Hampton seeks his fortune with a new invention, but finds himself caught between his criminal past and a family that has grown without him.

While the show presents itself as a typical redemption story, there is a lot more going on beneath the surface with a surreal quality that really makes it stand out. It is also a lot of fun to see Oyelowo embracing a comedic role outside the heavy dramatic roles he is known for. Government Cheese premiered the first four episodes of its 10-episode first season on Apple TV+ on April 16.

4

The Diamond Heist – Docuseries

Available April 16 On Netflix

Director Guy Ritchie produces this new Netflix docuseries, which sounds a lot like one of his British crime movies. However, The Diamond Heist is indeed based around a real event in which a group of London criminals came together to pull off a high-stakes and daring heist in the newly constructed Millennium Dome. With a rare and valuable diamond as the centerpiece of the building, the criminals aimed to infiltrate the dome, take the diamond, and escape via boat down the Thames River. However, things did not go down as smoothly as planned.

The docuseries is a thrilling, funny, and hugely entertaining walk-through of the operation as well as the efforts of the police to foil the robbery. It features interviews with many of the people connected to the actual case, including some of the criminals. All three episodes of The Diamond Heist dropped on Netflix on April 16.

Actor Jacob Elordi is a star on the rise, and he is earning strong acclaim for his latest performance in the Australian period drama The Narrow Road to the Deep North. Based on the novel by Richard Flanagan, Elordi stars as Dorrigo Evans, a young man on the cusp of heading into battle during World War II who begins an affair with his uncle’s wife. As a military surgeon, he becomes a prisoner of war and is eventually a decorated hero. However, the movie cuts back and forth in time as older Dorrigo (Ciaran Hinds) struggles with his complicated past.

The Narrow Road to the Deep North is a brutal and unflinching look at the cruelty of war that would be hard to take in one sitting.

All five episodes of the miniseries were released on Prime Video on April 17. However, it might not be an ideal series to binge, as The Narrow Road to the Deep North is a brutal and unflinching look at the cruelty of war that would be hard to take in one sitting.

The latest series in the Law & Order franchise returns for a new season while also bringing about a big change. Following his exit from Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2011, Christopher Meloni returned as beloved character Elliot Stabler in Law & Order: Organized Crime. Following the death of his wife, Stabler returns to the NYPD to join the Organized Crime Task Force, taking on the most notorious and dangerous figures in New York City’s underworld.

While the chemistry between Stabler and Olivia Benson in Law & Order: SVU was excellent, it is fun to see Meloni in the lead role and in perfect grizzled cop mode. The series is a bit grittier and complex than other Law & Order series, with more about Stabler’s personal life involved. Organized Crime season 4 left some big things to address for its return. However, while the series was originally on NBC as well, Law & Order: Organized Crime season 5 has become a Peacock exclusive, with the first two episodes premiering on April 17.
