Seth Rogen’s hilarious satire The Studio is one of the best modern examples of celebrities playing fictionalized versions of themselves, although it’s far from the first series to explore this comedic premise. Some of the funniest sitcoms of all time featured amazing guest appearances from actors, writers, and directors portraying exaggerated versions of themselves in absurd, bizarre, and outrageous situations. It takes a lot to make fun of ourselves, and all of these series showcase that even those who have reached the absolute pinnacle of fame and success still have the self-awareness needed to make light of themselves.

The Studio (2025)

The most recent example of celebrities portraying hilariously fictionalized versions of themselves was Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s fantastic new Apple TV+ series The Studio. With Rogen as the newly appointed head of a film studio, The Studio saw the comedy star interacting with elite Hollywood actors, writers, and directors while trying to greenlight artistically fulfilling projects that still achieved box office success. This desire was on full display in the pilot episode, which featured an incredible appearance from Martin Scorsese being touted as the unlikely director of an upcoming Kool-Aid movie.
As an incredible showbiz satire, The Studio utilized long one-shot sequences to give an insightful behind-the-scenes look at the often bizarre inner workings of Hollywood. With appearances by major actors like Charlize Theron, Steve Buscemi, and Zac Efron, each episode of The Studio reveals a new dimension of how studio executives’ vested interests often overshadow artistic integrity in the film industry.

Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant followed up on the success of The Office with the hilarious series Extras, which followed Andy Millman’s (Gervais) life initially as a background extra in film and television before becoming a B-list sitcom star. This premise allowed for plenty of cameos from major celebrities playing heightened, fictionalized versions of themselves behind the scenes on major productions.
With the likes of Daniel Radcliffe portraying a hilariously inappropriate teenage womanizer trying to seduce every female he sees or Kate Winslet shamelessly starring in a Holocaust film to win an Oscar, Extras constantly flipped the audience’s perception of an actor on its head and leaned into the absurd nature of fame. The guest stars were always clearly in on the joke, and each episode of Extras felt like a breath of fresh air as esteemed performers made light of themselves through sharp, cringe-inducing satire.

Entourage (2004 – 2011)

As a series that was inspired by the actor Mark Wahlberg’s early rise to fame in Hollywood, Entourage was absolutely packed with celebrity appearances as it depicted the life of the fictional A-list star Vincent Chase. With episodes centering around Vince and his friends navigating fame, film roles, and parties in Los Angeles, plenty of actors, directors, producers, musicians, and athletes would show up playing themselves as the chaos and hedonism of Hollywood were on full display.
With over 100 celebrity appearances in Entourage, it was thrilling to see everyone from Wahlberg himself to Kanye West find themselves in Vince’s orbit. While Entourage powerfully showcased the good and the bad of fame, at its core, it was really a story of male friendship and camaraderie that highlighted how the allure of celebrity can never replace well-established and caring friendships. With these themes in mind, the celebrity cameos in Entourage merely served to elevate and compound its core themes.

After the U.S. version of The Office became an astounding success, it seemed like every British series became a contender for the next great American remake. This idea served as the basis for Episodes, a hilarious British-American co-production that starred Matt LeBlanc as a satirical version of himself cast in the American version of an acclaimed British series. Episodes did not shy away from LeBlanc’s legacy as the Friends star Joey Tribbiani and hilariously made light of the notorious failure of his previous TV project, the lackluster Friends spin-off Joey.
LeBlanc wasn’t the only one to play himself in this clever critique of modern television, as the likes of Jay Leno, Gilbert Gottfried, and Friends co-star David Schwimmer all popped up as themselves. With Friends being one of the defining series of the 1990s and early 2000s, the way that LeBlanc made a grand return to television with such a tongue-in-cheek, metacontextual role was a bold move that really paid off. With five hilarious seasons, Episodes really deserves more attention from sitcom lovers.

30 Rock creator Tina Fey used her time as head writer for Saturday Night Live as the inspiration for this hilarious sitcom about the behind-the-scenes happenings of a fictional NBC sketch series. With plenty of surreal humor and astounding use of celebrity cameos, 30 Rock dismantled the television industry with sharp writing, great performances, and pointed satire. With guest stars often playing unhinged, over-the-top versions of their real selves, 30 Rock parodied public perceptions, Hollywood scandals, and industry stereotypes.
From Jerry Seinfeld playing an arrogant, out-of-touch version of himself to Oprah Winfrey showing up in Liz Lemon’s hallucination, 30 Rock always found unique and interesting ways to incorporate its guest stars. While cameo appearances can sometimes feel shoehorned in or like pointless fan service, in 30 Rock they were usually integral to the stories and gave celebrities an opportunity to poke fun at themselves.

With an improvisational style, part of the joy of the cringe-inducing HBO series was watching Larry interact with the world at large and seeing how different famous names conduct themselves when confronted with his lack of social decorum.
From accusing Michael J. Fox of exaggerating his Parkinson’s to shake up a can of soda to feuding with Lin-Manuel Miranda during stage rehearsals, throughout Curb Your Enthusiasm’s incredible 12 seasons, Larry David disseminated countless relationships and left a host of famous names disgruntled by his confrontational behavior. From recurring guests like Ted Danson to memorable one-off appearances from the likes of John McEnroe, Curb Your Enthusiasm was truly a masterclass in the comedic potential of celebrities appearing as fictionalized versions of themselves.
