A new leak about an upcoming character in Honkai: Star Rail has emerged, and based on the information, they could completely revitalize DoT (damage over time) mechanics. DoT mechanics haven’t been removed from the game, but their usage over the past year has been greatly diminished. A lot of this is due to the release of new characters that have proven to be more effective in battle with other types of mechanics. One of these characters, Acheron in Honkai: Star Rail, follows the Path of the Nihility, but somewhat ignores DoTs, only using their application as fuel for her Ultimate.
The last team that was truly reliant on DoT was helmed by Kafka and Black Swan, but that type of team comp has fallen into disuse. Overall, DoT still exists and is still used in battle, but more as a secondary effect to other types of damage output than the main source itself. As a community, we’re hoping that DoT effects will regain some value with the confirmed buffs to Kafka in Honkai: Star Rail, one of the main characters responsible for applying and activating DoTs, but another character may help that happen with more intensity than originally predicted.
Leaked New Character Could Have A New DoT System In Honkai: Star Rail
The New DoT Mechanic Is Likely Linked To A Nihility Character
According to leaked information that was allegedly gathered by a datamining process and obtained by the leaker known as Ubatcha, a new type of DoT system may make its way into a future patch, and that will likely come accompanied by a new character’s gameplay kit. The leak was shared in a post tagged as “Datamined” on Reddit. As seen in the leak, this new DoT system may resemble Jiaoqiu’s Ashen Roast debuff mechanic, in the sense that Ashen Roast is something of a special form of Burned DoT mechanic in the game.
For reference, when using Jiaoqiu in Honkai: Star Rail, his Ashen Roast stacks have different effects. The first stack will increase the DMG sustained by the opponent by 7.5%, with each subsequent stack then increasing this effect by 2.5% (up to five stacks, lasting for two turns). Additionally, an enemy with Ashen Roast is considered Burned, taking Fire DoT.
The leak mentions that this new DoT system will be the Physical equivalent of Ashen Roast, so it could be considered an alternate version of the classic Bleed DoT applied to enemies by Physical characters such as Luka. Given how the leak is presented, it does not seem like this leaked DoT system for Bleed will be applied to all upcoming Physical characters. Instead, it’s likely that it will be part of a single character’s gameplay kit. This new character should have this new type of Bleed mechanic and, with it, enable different types of effects in Honkai: Star Rail.
Honkai: Star Rail’s Leaked DoT Character Could Be Hysilens
The Chrysos Heir’s Release Is Likely After Phainon & The Fate Collab
According to a new leak shared by Sakura Haven, which was shared in a post tagged as “Reliable” on Reddit, players will eventually have access to one Nihility character, two Remembrance units, and one Destruction character in the future, after the rumored releases of Phainon, Saber, and Archer – all of which are expected to arrive in Version 3.4. After the Chrysos Heir and the two Honkai: Star Rail Fate collab characters, players may get access to the new Nihility character that uses the rumored DoT mechanic. Some reasoning leads to the understanding that this new Nihility character is Hysilens.

A new Star Rail Special Pass system may be introduced with Honkai: Star Rail 3.3, and players may never need to purchase Oneiric Shards again.
The first note is that Hysilens is one of the final Chrysos Heirs that has yet to be released. The character was teased before the release of Amphoreus, but they have yet to appear formally and be released as a playable unit, like the Chrysos Heirs before them. With Phainon’s release being heavily rumored for Version 3.4, it’s logical to presume that Hysilens will be one of the following characters. Furthermore, this is not the first time that there has been a connection between Hysilens and DoT mechanics in Honkai: Star Rail.
A previous leak had already indicated that Hysilens would be a character who is focused on applying DoT effects on enemies. Because DoT is one of the main specialties in the Nihility archetype, it was immediately presumed that Hysilens would be a Nihility. With the leaked confirmation that there is a Nihility character in the pipeline and the previous rumors about them, it’s possible to establish a connection that this unit will be Hysilens. At the time, the previous leak mentioned that Hysilens would bring forth a “new era of DoT” to Honkai: Star Rail.

I’m Certain The Leaked Relic Set From Honkai: Star Rail 3.3 Is Going To Be Phainon’s Best-In-Slot
Two new Relic sets from Honkai: Star Rail 3.3 have allegedly leaked, and I’m convinced that one of them will be Phainon’s best-in-slot.
The rumors had also mentioned that Hysilens would be capable of stacking DoT effects on enemies and detonating them with the same gameplay kit. Now, we may have a better sense of how that will work, even if the details are still scarce. If Hysilens has a DoT mechanic that somewhat resembles Jiaoqiu’s Ashen Roast, then not only will they be capable of inflicting Bleed on enemies, but they may also consistently activate their damage effects on enemies based on stacks. At the time of the leak, the concern was that Hysilens would powercreep older characters in Honkai: Star Rail.
DoT Mechanics Could Be Revitalized With Leaked Honkai: Star Rail Character
Together With A Buffed Kafka, Hysilens Could Make DoT Relevant Again
That may not actually be the case. The concern was that Kafka, a character who has already been forgotten, would get even more powercrept with Hysilens’ release. However, the classic Lightning Nihility character is bound to get a buff to her gameplay kit in Version 3.4. The idea is to reduce the amount of powercreep she has sustained and make Kafka usable once again in team comps moving forward. By bringing her up to the current standards, Kafka may not be powercrept by Hysilens, but instead made into an indispensable ally for the Chrysos Heir in Honkai: Star Rail.

You can already start pre-farming Cipher’s materials ahead of her release in Honkai: Star Rail 3.3, but one leaked item will be problematic.
As such, both characters together could truly live up to the rumors and inaugurate a new era for DoT mechanics in the game, not only making them useful once again, but just as competitive as traditional types of damage output, be it based on CRIT, HP loss, or even Break Effect. I’m particularly excited about the prospect of the return of DoT mechanics. Not only are DoTs fun to play, despite the current lack of significant damage output, but they have proven to be useful in the past, when they were up-to-date with the meta in Honkai: Star Rail.
