How To Equip & Cast Magic In Oblivion Remastered (& How To Learn New Spells)

If you’re used to Skyrim, and your first experience with its predecessor is Oblivion Remastered, then you might find yourself a bit confused about how magic works in the game. Unlike Skyrim, where you can equip spells to one or both of your hands, Oblivion Remastered doesn’t allow for dual wielding, and magic isn’t treated like a weapon. Even though this is a new version of Oblivion, with some elements of Skyrim incorporated, it seems the developers wanted to keep the experience as close to the original as possible in most ways.

Aside from using spells, you’ll also need to know how to use spell scrolls, and learn new spells if you want to be an efficient mage or half-caster. At the very least, even a full melee build will probably want the option to pop the occasional healing spell in the middle of combat. So, to help you enjoy Oblivion Remastered‘s surprise release to its fullest, let’s go over how to use magic.

How To Equip And Cast Spells In Oblivion Remastered

To equip a spell in Oblivion Remastered you’ll need to open up your menu, then navigate to the Magic tab at the top. Once there, you will be able to look through your spells either by category or all together. Highlight the spell you want to use and click equipped. Once it’s been successfully equipped, and you close the menu, you will see the icon of the spell on the bottom right side of your screen next to the image of your weapon. This means you’re ready to cast it, so long as you meet the requirements.

A game designer for the original Oblivion has spoken out after Oblivion Remastered was released, acknowledging how much impressive work was done.

To cast the spell, you don’t need to switch to your magic, you just need to click the designated “Cast Spell” button. On the PC version of Oblivion Remastered, the default key for this is C, and on a controller it is RB/R1. If that doesn’t work, check that you either have enough Magicka, or that your level is high enough to cast the spell. The game should give you an indication when trying to cast it what your issue is if it’s not working.

Using a spell scroll works the same way as casting a spell, but you have to equip it from your Inventory instead of the Magic menu. You will only be able to cast the spell as many times as the number of spells you have. You don’t need a Magic level to cast the spell like you normally would.

How To Learn New Spells In Oblivion Remastered

You Can Buy Them, Be Taught Them, Or Find Spell Tomes

To learn new spells in Oblivion Remastered, you will need to visit a spell merchant and purchase them. Another viable option is to join the Mages Guild and complete quests for its members, which will sometimes reward you with a new spell. In the original Oblivion, if you had the DLC you could find Spell Tomes as loot similar to Skyrim‘s that would teach you new spells. I’ve been playing the Deluxe Edition of Oblivion Remastered, meaning the DLC is included, and I have found some tomes. From my understanding they are also available in the Standard Edition of the game, but I can’t say for sure since it’s not the version I’m playing.
