You season 4 follows Joe to London, where he goes undercover as Jonathan Moore, a college professor, after faking his own death and framing his wife, Love Quinn. Joe finds himself once again intertwined with a wealthy group of people, and one friend he makes is Rhys. Rhys is running against Joe’s girlfriend Kate’s father, Tom Lockwood, for London Governor, and Tom wants Joe to kill Rhys to eliminate him as competition.
However, it’s soon revealed that Joe never actually knew Rhys. The final episodes of You season 4 dropped the bombshell twist that the version of Rhys who Joe was talking to, who was cunning and seemingly murderous, was actually a figment of Joe’s imagination. Joe ends up killing the real Rhys because Kate’s father was blackmailing him and because he thinks Rhys is the one killing his friends when it’s actually been Joe the whole time. Joe kills off the imaginary Rhys by pushing him off a bridge. However, at the end of the episode, Joe looks out the window and sees Rhys’ reflection staring back at him, suggesting he hasn’t gotten rid of him after all – something that could have huge implications for You season 5.

Joe finally comes to terms with his murderous side at the end of You season 4, and it doesn’t seem like he’s ready to part with it. Since Joe now knows Rhys isn’t real and has accepted he’s the killer, he likely won’t blame the murders on Rhys.
