Netflix has recently revealed the first look at its live-action adaptation of the gambling anime, Kakegurui, and so far, fans are not impressed. The show made changes not only to the character’s appearance, but it seems to be altering the story of its main protagonist, Yumeko Jabami. Based on first impressions, Netflix’s new series looks to be headed down the Death Note live-action route instead of the success it found with the adaptation of One Piece.
Kakegurui was originally released as a manga on March 22, 2014, written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Tōru Naomura, later receiving an anime adaptation that aired from 2017 to 2019 by the studio MAPPA. The story follows Yumeko Jabami, a transfer student who enrolls in the prestigious academy with a seedy underground gambling scene, establishing a hierarchy based on the students’ winnings. Although Yumeko looks sweet at first, she quickly disrupts the system by winning her way through the ranks, seeing past the schemes and scams, revealing her compulsive gambling addiction in a stunning, eerie twist.

The Adaptation Is Making Drastic Changes From Kakegurui
In the two minutes that Netflix showed on its take on Kakegurui, the direction decided to not only make major changes to the story but also upheave the entire cast in what appears to be an attempt to include a better range of representation. Fans are already beginning to see issues down the line, given that students who rank low in the school’s gambling ecosystem are typically reserved for being used as slaves or pawns.
Anime is usually very difficult to adapt to the real world because of the exaggerated animation and illustrations, complicated or colorful hairstyles, or even explaining the weird concepts behind character accessories with theater masks and eye patches. One Piece pulled this off well through an amazing costume and design team, helping characters like Zoro with his green hair and the Fish-Men blend into the world where such designs aren’t considered out of place.

BET has even made changes to the story, altering Yumeko’s motive for challenging the gambling schemes around the school as an attempt to find out who murdered her family. In the manga and anime, she only does so because of her compulsive gambling addiction and mastery of observation that gives her a sharp edge in winning any casino game she comes across. While this may add stakes for her uprising, it’s unnecessary and completely derails the Yumeko depicted in the anime and manga.
Kakegurui Already Had A Well-Received Live-Action Adaptation from Japan
And Even Japan Had A Rough Time Capturing Significant Moments
Many fans have also questioned why there was a need to change the name to BET, and that’s probably because Kakegurui already has a live-action adaptation. Japan aired the drama in early 2018, sticking much closer to the characters’ designs as represented in the manga and anime while trying to include the unique expressions of ecstasy when players got their winning hands. Now that Netflix has tried its hand at the gambling anime, audiences find that Japan did a much better job handling it while staying faithful to Kakegurui’s source.
