Harry Lawtey is an up-and-coming British actor who has already found himself in some memorable roles in key TV shows and notable movie franchises. Born on October 26, 1996, in Oxford, England, Lawtey began acting from a young age, appearing, as so many English actors do, on the stage for the first part of his career. His professional screen debut came in 2012, when he was only 16, appearing in an episode of the British science fantasy series, Wizards vs Aliens.
For the next couple of years, Lawtey took on small TV roles, slowly growing his profile until 2020, when he landed a major role in the cast of Industry, the British drama series about a prestigious investment bank in London. It’s from his role as Robert Spearing that most fans have come to know the young but talented Lawtey. At home, things aren’t much better. Her husband has left, and her two children are still in boarding school.

Harry Lawtey provides the voice of Daley in the animated children’s series, Chuggington, which is aimed at pre-school children. Set in the fictional town of Chugginton, young anthropomorphic railway locomotives train to become full-time workers on the tracks. The trains often interact with humans, whether they be passengers or crew members, and every episode sees them learning a lesson about friendship, persistence, or resolving conflict.
Essentially an updated version of Thomas & Friends, Chuggington is a solid addition to the animated kids’ show lineup. Daley is a red-and-white high-speed courier that makes deliveries with lightning-fast speed and eventually gives some of his workload to Koko, another high-speed train. There’s not much to the voice acting, but a part like this makes it clear Lawtey is willing to work in any format, as long as it means he is professionally acting.

Wizards Vs. Aliens (2012-2014)

Harry Lawtey’s first professional role came in Wizards vs Aliens, a science fiction fantasy series made for the BBC that follows the adventures of Tom Clarke (Scott Haran), a 16-year-old wizard who fights against an invading extraterrestrial force set on destroying any magic left in the world. Like Doctor Who for a younger generation, Wizards vs Aliens is a daffy, offbeat, but fun three-season series that has smart characters as well as good lessons for kids.
Old Mark is played by Brian Miller.
Lawtey appears in season 1, episode 1, “Dawn of the Nekross, Part 1”, as Mark France, a wizard captured by the aliens. In an attempt to consume his magic, the aliens put him in the Extractor, which has the added side effect of aging him up. Fortunately, Tom arrives just in time to save him. It’s a small role, but one that hints at the talents of the fledgling actor.

The Letter for the King is a coming-of-age fantasy adventure series developed for Netflix and based on the 1962 novel of the same name by Dutch author Tonke Dragt. The six-episode series follows Tiuri (Amir Wilson), an aspiring knight who is roped into a perilous quest to deliver a critical letter to King Favian (Yorick van Wageningen), who lives across a dangerous area known as the Great Mountains. It’s a series that is equal parts teen sitcom and low fantasy adventure.
Harry Lawtey plays Maurice in every episode of the series, yet his part is not particularly big. Lawtey appeared in Industry and The Letter for the King in the same year, but the roles could not be more different. The role showcases the completely alternate path Lawtey could have taken if he had had the mind to. Instead, he chose a much more dramatic acting route that has served him well.

Magpie Murders is based on the 2016 mystery novel by Anthony Horowitz, adapted for PBS’ Masterpiece in 2022. The series is adapted from the first book in the Susan Ryeland series and sees book editor Susan Ryeland (Lesley Manville) finishing up the edit on the latest popular Atticus Pünd book. When she sees that the last chapter is missing, she discovers the author is dead, and he’s filled this book with clues and hints about what really happened to him.
Harry Lawtey appears in all six episodes of the series as Robert Blakiston, a character who is in a story within a story. In the Atticus Pünd novels, Robert is the son of Mary Blakiston, who is found dead in her home. Robert is the chief suspect, and though it turns out he didn’t kill his mother, he does turn out to be responsible for a spate of other killings. It’s a complex series, particularly for Masterpiece. Lawley brings an earnestness to his performance and fits right in with the unique tone of the show.

Benediction follows Siegfried Sassoon (Jake Lowden), a British poet and World War I combat veteran who is sent to a psychiatric facility after he comes out as anti-war. Even after his release, Sassoon’s life is marked by sadness and failure. His romances with other men are unfulfilling, and the inability of his writing to have any effect on the upcoming war is a particularly hard-to-swallow reality. It’s a dour and tragic movie, marked by brief moments of success that make for a surprisingly hopeful ending.
Peter Capaldi plays an older Siegfried Sassoon.
Harry Lawtey plays Bobby Andrews, another gay man who befriends Sassoon while they are in the psychiatric facility and shares Sassoon’s sentiments about the role. It’s Lawtey’s first movie role after he was cast in Industry, and the beginning of a run of more notable film parts in the early 2020s. Lawtey once again shows his proficiency in adapting to whatever tone is needed for a show or movie.

Joker: Folie À Deux (2024)

Harry Lawtey joined a long and talented list of actors who have played Harvey Dent when he signed on for Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to 2019’s surprise hit, Joker. While Joker: Folie à Deux was not very well-received, it was still a major part of the pop culture conversation. In the follow-up, a musical for some reason, Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) is awaiting trial for the crimes he committed in the previous film. He’s joined by a new cast of characters, including a few notable DC names.
Harvey Dent is the assistant district attorney who wants to pursue the death penalty against Arthur.
Harvey Dent in Joker: Folie à Deux is not quite the Two-Face of the comic books, but he is by the end of the film, at least by the look of his mug. Lawtey does an excellent job portraying the Boy Scout ethic of Dent as a prosecutor, but he also injects him with plenty of smarm and self-righteousness, which is a needed part of the character for Two-Face to later work.

The Pale Blue Eye (2022)

The Pale Blue Eye is a smart and thrilling little period mystery set at West Point, New York, in the early 19th century. Veteran detective Augustus Landor (Christian Bale) is investigating a series of murders at the United States Military Academy. At a loss, he employs the help of a cadet, a young Edgar Allan Poe, played by Harry Melling of Harry Potter fame. Harry Lawtey plays Cadet Artemus Marquis, another student at the Academy.
Artemus is the son of Dr. Daniel Marquis (Toby Jones), who performs the autopsies on the deceased cadets. After it’s discovered that Artemus and his sister Lea (Lucy Boynton) practice black magic, which includes harvesting human organs, they capture Poe and prepare to sacrifice him. Poe is rescued by Augustus, and the Marquis children die in the ensuing fire. It’s a creepy and haunting performance from Lawtey. Artemus suffers from seizures, and there’s a distinct sadness to Lawtey’s portrayal.

You & Me (2023)

You & Me is a three-part romantic comedy-drama series from Jamie Davis, and stars Harry Lawtey as Ben, one of three main characters on the show. Though it’s billed as a comedy, You & Me is much more tragic and a much more striking series because of it. The series examines whether people can be happy again after experiencing the worst things imaginable. Ben is a carefree young London man who happens to meet a young woman, Jess (Sophia Brown), after they both miss the same bus.
Lawtey is a winning romantic lead and has an incredible amount of charm.
The pair strike up an immediate romance that lasts years, told in parallel in the show, but that is filled with a deep tragedy. It’s a simple role on the surface, but one that requires a deft hand to get a grip on all the complexities of the character underneath. It’s only three episodes, but it’s a showcase of Lawtey’s talent.

Industry (2020-Present)
Robert Spearing (24 Episodes, 2020-2024)
Arguably, the biggest role of Harry Lawtey’s young career, Robert Spearing in Industry, is the part that put Lawtey on the map. Industry follows the cutthroat partners, traders, and interns of Pierpoint & Co, a prestigious London investment bank, where money flies as fast as the acidic barbs and curses. Robert is a graduate from Oxford and from a working-class Welsh background who is assigned to the CPS desk in season 1.
Believing that the bank is a real meritocracy, Robert hopes his working-class background won’t be held against him. At the same time, he does everything he can to distance himself from it. A bright and well-respected employee, Harry Lawtey manages to make a character in an unlikeable world quite likeable. He is such a critical part of Industry that it’s going to feel very strange when he doesn’t return for season 4.
