Warning! Spoilers for You season 5 ahead!

Bronte noticed something was wrong with Beck’s book in You season 5, and she used this fact to ensure that Joe Goldberg faced justice. The Netflix series came to a close with 2025’s episodes, and the finale saw Joe finally imprisoned for his terrible crimes. Joe would have preferred death, but Bronte refused to shoot and kill the murderer, recognizing that Joe deserved a loveless life of isolation behind bars. Still, this wasn’t the extent of Joe’s punishment. At the end of You season 5, Bronte held Joe at gunpoint and forced him to correct one of his smaller yet most demeaning crimes.

After Mooney’s Bookstore burned down in You season 5, Bronte returned to her goal of taking Joe Goldberg down. To do so, she had to pretend to still be in love with him. The couple set out to start anew and made a pit stop at a vacant mansion. Bronte knew that she wouldn’t be able to get away with faking intimacy with Joe, so she used the buildup to take Joe by surprise with a gun. Once she forced her former lover to admit to murdering Guinevere Beck back in You season 1, Bronte pulled out Beck’s book and demanded that Joe sit and make some final corrections.

In the You season 5 episode, “The Dark Face of Love,” flashbacks reveal that Bronte and Beck had been friends while they attended Brown University. Bronte had been forced to drop out of school when her mother’s cancer got worse, so she only got word of Beck’s death after she moved back to Ohio. She then learned about Beck’s posthumously published book, The Dark Face of Love, but when she read it, Bronte found several contradictions. Parts of the book were clearly Beck’s voice, but others didn’t fit with the person Bronte had known.

We know from You season 1 that Beck wrote her book while she was imprisoned in Joe’s cage. After she died, Joe rearranged her writing into a novel and anonymously submitted the manuscript. Of course, the story couldn’t be incriminating to Joe, so he made various changes. Bronte noticed these immediately. Joe’s biggest fault was quoting Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, which Beck had discredited as a feminist work. Bronte recognized that someone had tampered with Beck’s writing, which led her to investigate Joe Goldberg.

Why Bronte Makes Joe Fix Beck’s Book In The You Series Finale

Bronte Purged Beck’s Voice Of Joe’s Influence

When Bronte confronted Joe at the end of You season 5, she came ready with a copy of Beck’s books. At gunpoint, she forced Joe to come clean about the changes he made to The Dark Face of Love. “I could spot your clumsy rewrites before I even met you,” she said, “It wasn’t enough that you took her life, you had to take her f**king voice, too?Bronte was enraged that Joe had taken Beck’s final contribution to the world and distorted it for his best interests. He ignorantly credited works like A Doll’s House, which Beck believed minimized women’s voices, falsely linking them to her legacy.

Bronte couldn’t stand for his. While keeping her gun trained on Joe, Beck’s killer went through The Dark Face of Love line by line, crossing out his own contributions to the book. Once Joe was safely behind bars, alone and unloved for the rest of his life, Bronte had Beck’s book republished. This version was even more successful than the one Joe had altered. It was Beck’s voice, and hers alone, void of Joe’s gross imitation filled with blind misogyny.

Beck’s Book Being Re-Released Is The Perfect Way To End Netflix’s You

This Is Justice

Back in You season 1’s finale, Joe considered The Dark Face of Love to be his final gift to Beck. He said this was the last thing they created together and considered it a representation of their love. Of course, this was utterly misguided. Beck wrote this book while she was Joe’s prisoner. This wasn’t love, but possession, ownership, and profound, disturbing sickness. Joe had claimed Beck’s art for his own and credited its creation and success to his own feelings of love for her. You, season 5, seeing Beck’s book re-released without Joe’s tainted contribution, was the perfect reparation.

Beck told Joe back in You season 1 that he would spend the rest of his life in prison, and thanks to Bronte, this is precisely what happened.

Bronte set out in You season 5 to avenge Beck, and she was certainly successful. Beck told Joe back in You season 1 that he would spend the rest of his life in prison, and thanks to Bronte, this is precisely what happened. Joe believed himself to be a champion of women, so much better than the misogynists who silenced female voices. However, in truth, he was the very worst of them. You ended by seeing these women take their voices back.
