WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Black Mirror Season 7.
The ending of Black Mirror season 7, episode 6, “USS Callister: Into Infinity,” draws comparisons to the premise of a celebrated Spike Jonze movie starring John Cusack. The feature film-length “USS Callister: Into Infinity” became the first sequel episode in the Black Mirror universe. It features most of the original cast from the groundbreaking and Emmy-winning Black Mirror season 4 episode, “USS Callister,” including Cristin Milioti, Jimmi Simpson, Billy Magnussen, and Jesse Plemons.
By the end of “USS Callister: Into Infinity”, the Infinity copy of Nanette is able to escape from the online multiplayer universe and rescue her starship crew after encountering a copy of Robert Daly’s consciousness trapped at the center of the game. Nanette effectively deletes the game and lives through the original Nanette’s body after she was hit by a car and nearly died. The catch, however, is that Nanette’s crew needed somewhere in reality to escape to, which ultimately became inside Nanette’s own mind.
USS Callister: Into Infinity’s Ending Mirrors Being John Malkovich’s Story
Both Feature Characters Seeing Through Another’s Character’s Eyes (Literally)
The ending of Black Mirror season 7, episode 6, brings back memories of the 1999 cult classic Being John Malkovich. Directed by Jonze (Her, Adaptation.) and written by legendary screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), Being John Malkovich has an incredibly unique premise in which a puppeteer named Craig Schwartz (Cusack), discovers a portal into the mind of movie star John Malkovich, who brilliantly plays himself in the Oscar-nominated film.
Both Black Mirror’s “USS Callister: Into Infinity” and Being John Malkovich share the idea of seeing through someone else’s eyes and living in their head. While both projects employ the concept in different ways, the central idea is present in each. In Being John Malkovich, Craig can actually override and control Malkovich’s mind, whereas in “USS Callister: Into Infinity,” Nanette’s crew has to request her permission to perform bodily and cognitive functions, such as turning on the TV to their favorite reality show.
Can The USS Callister Crew Ever Leave Nanette’s Mind In Black Mirror?
Nanette Is Stuck With Her Crew Since They Cannot Leave
Nanette’s crew is pretty much stuck inside Nanette’s mind, using her eyes to see the outside world exactly as she does. Something similar to this also happened in the Black Mirror season 4 episode, “Black Museum.” While Nanette is patient and accommodating, surely having to deal with actual voices in her head will eventually become intolerable and infuriating over time.
