Mistborn author Brandon Sanderson has revealed the cover for his upcoming Cosmere book, and it’s a reminder to read this underrated story he wrote. Brandon Sanderson’s upcoming books include several Cosmere titles, but the only one releasing in 2025 is Isles of the Emberdark, which will be out later this year for those who supported the BacketKit campaign. Recently, Sanderson revealed the cover art for the BacketKit edition of the novel, keeping with the style of his previous Cosmere Secret Project books such as Tress of the Emerald Sea. The cover features a parrot, which is tied to the book’s magic system.

Isles of the Emberdark is set to take place on First of the Sun, the first planet in the Drominad system, which we first visited in the 2014 novella Sixth of the Dusk. On the island of Patji, birds called “Aviar” have acquired powers that they share with human companions, with various bird species providing different abilities. Sixth of the Dusk is only a work of short fiction, so we’re yet to see the full potential of this magic system.

The new book is set to take place six years after Sixth of the Dusk, with the intention of following up on the main character, Dusk’s, story. It will involve him traveling into the Emberdark, an area of Shadesmar/the Cognitive Realm, deep into the Cosmere’s future. The book is set to incorporate a story about warring galactic superpowers, so the expansion of Sixth of the Dusk will likely also be deeply appealing to general Cosmere fans, making the original novella worth reading in preparation.

Sixth of the Dusk contains one of my favorite Cosmere magic systems, as it directly incorporates animal companions. Sure, we have the spren in The Stormlight Archive, but that’s not exactly the same as characters walking around with magical bird companions. It’s not as developed as Allomancy in Mistborn, of course, so I’m expecting Isles of the Emberdark will demonstrate more of the Aviar abilities, as the plot is meant to surround a breeding and collecting facility for Aviar, showing yet another exploitation of Investiture.
