Wednesday season 2 is coming very soon, and Tim Burton’s reimagining of The Addams Family is already one of the biggest Netflix original series of all time. Directed by Burton and starring scream queen Jenna Ortega in the title role, Wednesday’s first season follows Wednesday Addams as she’s sent to Nevermore Academy, a boarding school for supernatural “outcasts.” Season 1 primarily consists of the title character learning to adjust to her new school while solving a murder mystery that impacted her parents 30 years ago.

Wednesday was an instant success for Netflix, and it even started a few social media trends that helped get more eyes on the series. This made a sophomore season an absolute necessity, and the renewal order came fast and furious from the streamer, who hoped to strike while the iron was hot. The story left a lot unresolved as well, and Wednesday’s new threatening stalker opens the door for a more personal story for the Addams’ only daughter. It’s also been promised that Wednesday season 2 will be even more supernatural, suggesting a host of scary twists are coming soon.

As the extended wait for season 2 continues, the latest news finds screen icon Steve Buscemi discussing working with Jenna Ortega. The actor, best known for turns in movies like The Big Lebowski and Monsters Inc., had nothing but positive things to say about his newest co-star, saying, “She’s just, she’s so sharp and funny and down to earth. And just a wonderful actress” (via People). This is high praise considering Buscemi’s own chops as a performer, and speaks to the elevated nature of the show’s sophomore season.

Unfortunately, Buscemi couldn’t give away much about the upcoming season, saying “All very hush-hush,” and little is known about his character, Barry Dort. However, Buscemi’s casting implies that Dort will be an important part of season 2, and you don’t bring an actor of his caliber onboard for a mere cameo or guest appearance.

Naturally, because Wednesday was such a smashing success for Netflix in its first season, the streamer wasted no time in announcing a second. However, the January 2023 reveal of Wednesday season 2 came before the eventual Hollywood strikes, putting many productions on hold for the better part of the year. With the strikes out of the way, the show went into production in early May 2024 and wrapped in December. However, a release date for the series return remains elusive for now.

Wednesday season 1 dropped all 8 of its episodes on November 23, 2022.

It’s very possible that Wednesday season 2 could arrive in 2025, and Netflix has promised as much in previous updates. The fall or winter would be the most logical place to drop season 2’s premiere, and it served the debut season quite well. This means that Wednesday season 2 could arrive around a year after it wrapped filming, and three full years after the season 1 debut. If the series gets renewed for additional seasons soon, that production timeline will need to be trimmed.

Wednesday Season 2 Cast Details

Jenna Ortega Returns To Lead The Cast Once Again

Since they are expected to play a much larger role in season 2, the rest of the Addams Family is also likely to reprise their roles

Most of Wednesday season 1’s main cast will return for season 2, including the familiar faces that helped make it so popular in the first place. Naturally, Jenna Ortega will return as Wednesday and Netflix had long since confirmed that fact by renewing the show for more episodes. Since they are expected to play a much larger role in season 2, the rest of the Addams Family are also going to reprise their roles, including an undisclosed addition to the clan which fans haven’t met yet. With Netflix’s recent casting video, that new addition is confirmed to be Grandma Addams, played by Joanna Lumley.

The first new addition to the cast was Steve Buscemi, who will play the role of Barry Dort. Speculation abounds that he might be brought in as the replacement for the late Principle Weems, but nothing has been confirmed. Additionally, Thandiwe Newton has joined Wednesday season 2 as Dr. Fairburn. Billie Piper has been cast as Capri, and she’ll be joined by fellow newcomers Christopher Lloyd, Haley Joel Osment, and Heather Matarazzo who have been cast in undisclosed roles. Newcomers Evie Templeton, Owen Painter, Noah Taylor, Frances O’Connor, and Joonas Suotamo are also cast in season 2.

Christopher Lloyd previously played Uncle Fester in The Addams Family (1991).

In a surprising twist, pop star Lady Gaga has been tapped to play a role in the upcoming season. Nothing is known about the part she’ll be playing, and it’s unclear if she’ll have a cameo or a major role. Considering Gaga’s strong history with acting, she may be integral to the second season. The Oscar and Grammy-winning pop icon turned heads in movies like A Star is Born and Joker: Folie à Deux, but is also no stranger to horror TV, with two appearances in the anthology series American Horror Story.

In Wednesday’s season 1 ending, Wednesday returned home for summer break only to receive threatening texts. The texts include images of Wednesday speaking to Tyler in the coffee shop and Xavier giving her a new phone, with Wednesday surmising that she now has her own nefarious stalker. Wednesday’s season 1 finale thus sets up a mysterious foe for the title character in season 2, suggesting Joseph Crackstone’s plan to eradicate outcasts isn’t entirely over.

The final sequence of season 1 reveals Tyler can still turn into a Hyde, which hints he’ll come back for revenge in Wednesday season 2. The first season teased a potential romance between Wednesday Addams and Xavier Thorpe, which could finally come to fruition in Wednesday season 2. According to Jenna Ortega, Wednesday season 2 will be more supernatural, which suggests that she will go up against even more monsters when she returns.
