This article discusses suicide.
Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Dark Winds season 3’s finale.Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) had one moment at the end of Dark Winds season 3 that made him extremely similar to Sheriff Gordo Sena (A Martinez), and it could have big implications for his future. Jim Chee had a few big developments in the ending of Dark Winds season 3. For example, Chee finally rekindled his romantic relationship with Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten), and he was able to return George Bowlegs (Bodhi Okuma Linton) to his father and Chee’s old bully, Shorty (Derek Hinkey). Not everything turned out well for Chee, though, and one moment brought him closer to Gordo in a bad way.
Gordo is one of the best characters in Dark Winds. He’s a kind and loyal friend to Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and a good police officer, and he’s always good for a laugh. If Chee does become more like him, it wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing. However, Gordo also has some skeletons in his closet, and one of the darkest moments in his past directly mirrored what Chee had to do with Dr. Reynolds (Christopher Heyerdahl). This moment could have a major effect on Chee, and it could define his entire story in Dark Winds season 4.
Reynolds Died By Suicide By Cop In Dark Winds Season 3’s Finale
Chee Had To Shoot Reynolds When He Refused To Drop His Gun
After Leaphorn and Chee boarded the train Reynolds and George were on, there was a brief standoff. Though Leaphorn managed to convince Reynolds to let George go, the archaeologist refused to drop his pistol. Reynolds was essentially trying to die by suicide by cop, as he noted that his entire professional career was over, and the only thing waiting for him was a long stay in jail. However, it was Chee, not Leaphorn, who shot Reynolds after he began to raise his gun, which mirrors a story Gordo told in Dark Winds season 2.
Gordo Told A Story About How He Killed A Man Who Died By Suicide By Cop In Dark Winds Season 2
Gordo Told Leaphorn That The Man He Killed Was “Bound” To Him
At the end of Dark Winds season 2, Gordo shared a story that was eerily familiar to the way Chee had to kill Dr. Reynolds. As Gordo told Leaphorn, when he was a younger police officer, he once had to kill a man who refused to drop a pistol, just as Chee did with Reynolds. Gordo was called into a scene where a man had murdered his wife. When he arrived at the scene, Gordo had to kill the man when he refused to put down his pistol, and he realized that the man was attempting to die by suicide by cop, just as Reynolds was with Chee.
Chee and Gordo’s stories are eerily similar, and Gordo’s story may have some insights into what’s in store for Chee. As Gordo told Joe, he never forgot the man he killed, and the entire ordeal haunted him for at least two decades. He even said, “When you kill a man, they’re bound to you. Wherever you go in this life, they’re with you. Maybe the next one, too.” Gordo never truly got over the suicide by cop he was unwillingly involved in, which may indicate that Chee won’t be able to get past Reynolds’ death.
Jim Chee Might End Up Just Like Gordo In Dark Winds Season 4
Reynolds’ Death May Weigh On Chee In The Future Of Dark Winds
Unfortunately for Chee, if his story continues to be like Gordo’s, there will be a lot of pain in store for him. As previously mentioned, Gordo never moved past the man he had to kill, and his face haunted him for years to come. Dr. Reynolds is the first person Chee has ever killed in Dark Winds, so he may end up being “bound” to Chee just like Gordo. Even though Chee was justified in killing Reynolds, and he only did so to protect George and Leaphorn, murder could easily weigh on Chee’s conscience in Dark Winds season 4.

George R.R. Martin offers a production update on Dark Winds season 4, teasing what is ahead as new season 3 episodes continue to be released.
Luckily, there’s still a ray of hope for Chee. If Chee really does feel that Reynolds is “bound” to him, he might begin to lean further into the Navajo tradition of medicine and spiritualism. That would bring him closer to the Chee from Tony Hillerman’s books, and his relationship with the already-spiritual Bernadette could make it even easier. Chee learning from Reynolds’ death and using it to improve himself would also help him mirror Joe’s story in Dark Winds season 4 as he tries to earn Emma’s (Deanna Allison) forgiveness. Jim Chee could actually benefit from killing Reynolds in Dark Winds season 4.
