Another FBI offshoot is coming soon, and after learning who one of the stars of the upcoming spinoff is, it’s clear that Dick Wolf’s CBS shows have a type regarding their leads. The FBI franchise began with FBI in 2018, and the original police procedural TV series has been a hit ever since. It’s going on eight seasons (with the seventh ending in May 2025 and the eighth premiering sometime during the 2025–2026 season), but has already been renewed through nine. Unfortunately, FBI‘s two aired spinoffs — FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International — haven’t fared as well as the first show.
CBS has already ordered CIA straight-to-series for the 2025–2026 network TV season.
While FBI will be on the air for at least two more years, CBS canceled FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International in early 2025. So, the two series are set to end in the spring of 2025. Meanwhile, the FBI franchise will live on via the original show and its third spinoff, which is tentatively titled CIA.
Tom Ellis Has Been Cast As The Lead In FBI: CIA
Ellis Will Play A CIA Agent
According to Deadline, CBS has cast Tom Ellis as one of CIA‘s two lead characters. The actor will reportedly star as the show’s “fast-talking, rule-breaking loose cannon” CIA officer, whose name is unknown. When the spinoff was first announced, its title was FBI: CIA because it revolves around the unlikely partnership of an FBI agent and a CIA case officer (aka Ellis’s character). However, with the news of Ellis’s casting, the series is now simply being called CIA.
Together, Ellis’s CIA officer and the FBI agent join forces at the CIA’s New York Station to solve cases concerning threats to the United States within the confines of the country in the FBI franchise’s upcoming CIA spinoff.
CBS has yet to reveal who will star opposite Ellis in the FBI offshoot. But we know that CIA‘s second lead is a “by-the-book, seasoned and smart FBI agent who believes in the rule of law.” Together, Ellis’s CIA officer and the FBI agent join forces at the CIA’s New York Station to solve cases concerning threats to the United States within the confines of the country in the FBI franchise’s upcoming CIA spinoff.

Missy Peregrym, of Stick It and Rookie Blue fame, kicked things off in the original series. Then, the first spinoff, FBI: Most Wanted, pulled Julian McMahon, best known for his roles in Charmed, Nip/Tuck, and Fantastic Four. When McMahon left, the series signed Dylan McDermott (The Practice, American Horror Story, and Law & Order) to replace him. As for FBI: International, Luke Kleintank from Bones starred as the lead for three seasons before the second FBI spinoff replaced him with Chicago PD‘s Jesse Lee Soffer.
