Warning! Spoilers ahead for Summer of Superman Special #1!A big moment in Superman history isn’t just a major change for two fan-favorite heroes, it suggests that they’re about to play a much bigger role in the DC Universe. After months of teasing, DC Comics has finally begun its Summer of Superman initiative, and two heroes are about to become a big asset to the Man of Steel.
In Summer of Superman Special #1 by Mark Waid, Dan Slott, Joshua Williamson, Jorge Jiménez, Belén Ortega, Dan Mora, and Dave Sharpe, Lana Lang and John Henry Irons’ wedding day has come. Thankfully, despite all the chaos from dealing with the time-displaced villain, Validus, didn’t interfere with the two heroes exchanging vows.
After Steel and Superwoman Red depart for their honeymoon, Superman and Mister Terrific try to contain Validus for study, only for the villain to disappear. Superman leaves for Metropolis, but notes that he’s left a message for John so that they can keep an eye on the anomaly in Smallville.
Steel and Superwoman Red are About to Play a Bigger Role in DC’s Future
Strange Things are Afoot in Smallville and Superman Needs Help
With an anticipated movie reboot on the horizon, it’s a big year for the Man of Steel. To capitalize on the hype, DC Comics began its latest initiative to honor the Big Blue Boy Scout, the Summer of Superman. For the next several months, the publisher is celebrating everything about its iconic hero, from his history to his expansive cast. Not only is DC Comics going in bold new directions in ongoing titles like Superman and Action Comics, it’s also getting ready to publish new series starring the Man of Tomorrow and his cast, such as Superman Unlimited.
It may be the Summer of Superman, but other heroes are getting an opportunity to shine as well. DC Comics has already confirmed that Supergirl and Krypto are getting a new ongoing and miniseries respectively. Given the sizable role the two play in Summer of Superman Special #1, it would stand to reason that DC Comics may have something bigger in mind for Steel and Superwoman Red. Not to mention, Smallville’s past is about to be explored in Action Comics, so why not let two heroes with close ties to the town explore the odd events of modern-day Smallville?
The Summer of Superman is About Everyone, Not Just the Man of Steel
John and Lana Have the Perfect Opportunity for Growth in Smallville
Of course, nothing’s confirmed for the two just yet and there’s no guarantee that Lana and John will get their own series or miniseries. But the Summer of Superman is an ambitious initiative and now would be the perfect time to elevate these two heroes and give readers a chance to see what’s going on for them (especially now that they’ve begun this latest chapter of their lives). Hopefully, this wedding between two of Superman’s closest allies is just the start of their latest adventure and readers will get to see more from them.
Summer of Superman Special #1 is available now from DC Comics.
