Ella Purnell has now been cast in a new comedy movie called Hot Ted. While she has been acting for a while, Purnell is best known for playing the lead role of Lucy in the Prime Video TV series Fallout. An adaptation of the hit video game series, the show told an original story set in the post-apocalyptic world of the games. In addition to Purnell, Fallout featured a leading cast including Walton Goggins, Moises Arias, Aaron Moten, and Zach Cherry. The series has led to other roles for Purnell, including playing the lead in Sweetpea.
As per Variety, Purnell has been attached to another project, the movie Hot Ted. The teen comedy will follow the story of a true-crime podcast fanatic named Zoe who spends a summer attending camp against her will. One day, things get considerably more exciting when one of the camp counselors doesn’t show up to work and Zoe starts to suspect something is up. The movie will be directed by Hannah Levy and written by Grace McLeod. In addition to Purnell, Hot Ted will star Ariana Greenblatt and Billy Magnussen. The synopsis says:
“Ted’s got all the hallmarks of a classic serial killer: he’s not on social media, and he owns a van. The only trouble is, he’s too hot to be a murderer. It’s up to Zoe and her friends to investigate the truth: is Hot Ted really a serial killer or is he just, like… the perfect guy?”
Levy also added:
“’Hot Ted’ is a psychosexual thriller as imagined by virgins. ‘Mean Girls’ meets ‘American Psycho.’ This is the movie I’ve been dreaming to make — a reinvention of the camp comedy that speaks to being a teenager right now and always.”
What This Means For Hot Ted
Hannah Levy Previously Worked For SNL
Producers on Hot Ted include Magnussen, Shane Andries, Anne Hollister, Purnell, Javier Chapa, and Phillip Braun. Executive producing are Morgan Cano-Long, Robert Muñoz, James Pugh, and George Hamilton. Levy is a first-time feature director who is known for their work on Saturday Night Live, directing segments for dozens of episodes. Magnussen celebrated Levy and McLeod’s involvement in Hot Ted, noting that his production company HappyBad Bungalow “is all about uplifting original, inspiring artists.” Check out the full quote from Magnussen below:
“HappyBad Bungalow is all about uplifting original, inspiring artists. We couldn’t be more fired up to back the razor-sharp voices of Grace McLeod and Hannah Levy in this refreshing project!”
In addition to releasing the synopsis, the main character information was also revealed for Hot Ted. Purnell will be playing a character named Amy, who is a counselor at the camp. According to the initial description, Amy excuses counselor Liz’s mysterious absence by saying that she had to tend to a “family emergency.” Greenblatt will play Zoe, the Shady Pines Camp attendee and true-crime podcast fan. Magnussen will play Ted, the camp counselor whose name is referenced in the title.
Our Take On Hot Ted
Ella Purnell Continues An Interesting Trend
While summer camp-based movies are nothing new, Hot Ted seems to be a modernized and interesting premise for a film. Combining “psychosexual thriller” and “camp comedy,” the film is sure to be genre-bending. The film will also create an interesting recent career pattern for Purnell, who was previously involved with a serial-killer project with the series Sweetpea. While she may not actually be a killer in Hot Ted, it will still be interesting to see how the actor adapts to a film with similar themes.
