Resident Playbook, which is a spinoff of Hospital Playlist, has several connections to its parent show. Resident Playbook includes a cast of new and seasoned actors who bring Kim Song-hee’s intense and emotional story to life. The medical K-drama focuses on four first-year residents in the OB-GYN department of the Jongno branch of Yulje Medical Center. While the Korean TV show mostly focuses on their careers, it also offers glimpses into their personal lives.

One of the most highly anticipated K-dramas of 2025, Resident Playbook premiered to positive reviews. The Korean series perfectly captures the high-stakes and often demanding journey that first-year medical residents have to go through before becoming full-fledged doctors. Although Resident Playbook is a different show and has a separate plot, it does have some connections to Hospital Playlist.

Resident Playbook Is A Spinoff Of Hospital Playlist

Hospital Playlist And Resident Playbook Are Part Of The Wise Life Series

Released in 2020, Hospital Playlist was the second installment in the Wise Life series, which included Prison Playbook. The medical K-drama focused on five doctors and friends, who were navigating the complexities of their careers while also juggling their personal lives. Hospital Playlist was a hit with both audiences and critics, who have praised the K-drama for its heartfelt slice-of-life narratives, the cast’s great performance, and incredible soundtrack. Due to the success of Hospital Playlist’s first season, a sophomore season was released a year later.

TvN’s medical drama, Resident Playbook, starring Go Youn-jung and Shin Si-ah, has become a global hit– so how many episodes will the K-drama have?

A few years after Hospital Playlist season 2 concluded, a spinoff K-drama, Resident Playbook, entered production. Resident Playbook was initially supposed to debut on tvN in 2024, but it was removed from that year’s roster. The Hospital Playlist spinoff includes several nods to its parent series that show that it is set in the same universe. Although there are a variety of differences between the two medical K-dramas, certain storylines and characters intersect.

How Resident Playbook’s Story Ties Into Hospital Playlist

Resident Playbook & Hospital Playlist Are Interconnected

Although the residents in Resident Playbook don’t work at the same hospital as the surgeons in Hospital Playlist, the show takes place in the same world. Yi-young, Sa-bi, Jae-il, and Nam Kyung work at the Jongdo branch of Yulje Medical Center. In Hospital Playlist, Lee Ik-jun, Ahn Jeong-won, Kim Jun-wan, Yang Seok-hyeong, and Chae Song-hwa work at Yulje Medical Centre. Given the ties between the two hospitals, it’s not surprising that some of Hospital Playlist’s characters have appeared in Resident Playbook.

New episodes of Resident Playbook are released every Saturday and Sunday on tvN and Netflix, with the finale set to premiere on May 18, 2025.

Since the two hospitals are under the same management, there might be instances when the doctors in Hospital Playlist and Resident Playbook will have to work together, whether it’s on cases or research papers. Further, some doctors from Yulje Medical Centre transferred to the Jongdo branch of the hospital, which shows that the stories from the two medical K-dramas are indeed connected.

After the second season of Resident Playbook’s parent show ended, many questioned whether there would be a season 3 of Hospital Playlist. Unfortunately, there haven’t been any updates on that front, but some of the Hospital Playlist characters have made appearances in its spinoff show. In Resident Playbook episode 2, Hospital Playlist’s Chu Min-ah had a brief cameo. In the scene, Min-ah had coffee with Yi-young, where she recounted her experience as a resident. Her appearance in Resident Playbook also confirmed that she got married to Yang Seok-hyung.

Yong Seok-min, who is now a professor, has been featured in Resident Playbook. The Hospital Playlist character is briefly shown taking glances at a person behind him in an elevator (who happens to be Heo Seon-bin) in the K-drama’s third episode. But perhaps the best cameo in Resident Playbook so far is Jung Kyung-ho’s. Kyung-ho, who plays the popular cardiothoracic surgeon, Kim Jun-wan, appeared at the Jongno branch for a case study and to offer his support to Professor Seo.

Shin Hyu-bin, Jung Moon-aung, and Bae Hyeon-seong might also be in the next episodes of Resident Playbook.

There are several other Hospital Playlist characters who, according to reports, are set to have cameos in Resident Playbook. Kwak Sun-young, who took on the role of Lee Ik-sun, Lee Ik-jun’s sister, is one of the actors who may have a special appearance in Resident Playbook. Shin Hyu-bin, Jung Moon-aung, and Bae Hyeon-seong might also be in the next episodes of Resident Playbook (via Soompi). However, there hasn’t been any confirmation about how they will fit into Resident Playbook.
