The Adoring Fan has earned his place as one of the most enduring followers in video game history, and he’s back in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered. Where most fan-favorite video game companions gain their notoriety based on their helpfulness in combat, their importance to the story, or their centrality to certain game mechanics, the Adoring Fan offers absolutely none of those. He’s a comic relief character who exists merely to fawn over your custom character until he inevitably dies in the most humiliating way possible.

To that end, a tradition has developed of finding new ways to torment the Adoring Fan, not unlike players did with Koroks in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Trapping him behind Oblivion Gates, pushing him off mountains, even launching him skyward with the help of mods – players seem to have a penchant for finding cruel and unusual ways to punish the Adoring Fan. And with his faithful adaptation into Oblivion Remastered, that tradition has picked up again. If you want to get in on the fun, here’s how you can get your very own Adoring Fan.

How To Recruit The Adoring Fan

Becoming The Grand Champion

In order to recruit the Adoring Fan, you’ll have to become Grand Champion of Oblivion‘s Arena. In order to begin that questline, fast travel to the Imperial City Arena marker on the eastern side of the city. Enter through the gate, then turn immediately left and go through the wooden door to enter the Arena’s Bloodworks. In the smaller room on your left, you’ll find Owyn; speak with him and tell him you want to be a combatant in the Arena. He’ll offer you a suit of Arena Raiment, officially inducting you into the Arena faction.

You must wear your Arena Raiment in order to participate in a fight. Make sure you pick the one corresponding to your preferred type of armor.

From here on out, you can fight in the Arena by first speaking to Owyn, then heading through the gate at the back of the area and up the ramp. You’ll have to win 22 increasingly difficult battles in order to become the Grand Champion. Every three battles, you’ll rank up (and earn an achievement). You should be able to win the first three from the very beginning of the game; from there on out, you’ll want to match the maximum level of your opponents in order to ensure an easy victory. The table below breaks down the average enemy level by Arena rank.

Oblivion Remastered allows you to join several factions, including the Thieves Guild. Anyone planning a life of crime will want to join up.

Once you hit Champion rank, you’ll unlock the final battle: the fight against reigning Grand Champion Agronak gro-Malog. To make this fight significantly easier, complete Agronak’s personal quest, “Origin of the Gray Prince,” before taking it on. Completing this quest will make him despondent, and he’ll refuse to fight back. Killing him in this state also counts as a murder for the purposes of joining the Dark Brotherhood.

From there, simply head to the entrance of the Arena, and the Adoring Fan will be waiting for you there. Speak with him, and he’ll offer to follow you.

What The Adoring Fan Actually Does

Limited Uses

Frankly, the Adoring Fan doesn’t do much of anything. He can’t carry items for you, and, as soon as you get into combat, he’ll run away in terror. You can, however, force him to fight by casting a Frenzy spell. By speaking to him, you can ask him to wait in place or leave your side permanently. If you tell him to leave, or he happens to die, you’ll just find him back at the Arena waiting for you after a maximum of three in-game days.

So, while the Adoring Fan is far from the most useful companion, having him around can be a lot of fun – until it gets annoying. Thankfully, it’s easy enough to dismiss him and recruit him again later if you value your peace in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered.
