Several of Joe Goldberg’s victims finally get justice in You season 5, and that includes Love Quinn, though the show’s final outing repeats a huge mistake with her character and makes it worse. While the stalking and death of Guinevere Beck is the starting point of the entire series, Love is Joe’s most important love interest after Beck. Love is the mother of Joe’s son, Henry — who gets his own tragic You season 5 story — and she’s also proof that Joe can’t love the worst parts of himself, as she’s a direct reflection of them.

And Joe’s arc in season 5 drives home why he couldn’t remain with Love (beyond the fact that he sabotages every relationship he enters). While Joe wants a woman to accept the darkest parts of himself, he doesn’t want someone who shares those tendencies. This is his debacle with Kate, who wants to be free of it all, and Bronte, who pretends to accept Joe but doesn’t stoop to his level. These revelations offer opportunities to call back to Love in You‘s final season, as does Henry’s narrative. However, the show doesn’t take advantage of that as much as it should.

Despite Love’s importance to Joe Goldberg’s story throughout You, the final season doesn’t give her enough of a presence. There are appearances from Beck, despite the fact that she’s been dead for years, so the series could have worked in a few cameos from Love in as well. Even if she couldn’t be around physically, there simply aren’t enough references to her. She’s mentioned when Reagan slings accusations at “Henry’s mother,” and Dottie Quinn is one of the returning characters who speaks out against Joe Goldberg. But it still isn’t enough to offer the character closure.

You Season 5 Finally Solves A Love Quinn Mystery From 4 Years Ago

You season 5 finally answered a major question about Love’s season 3 fate, but the series still didn’t go far enough to give her character closure.

And given that You season 5 marks the end of Joe Goldberg’s story, it really should have gone further in honoring all his previous obsessions, not just Beck. While it makes sense to bring the story full circle using Beck, there’s time to revisit the likes of Love and Candace, honoring their parts in the series as well. And Love is incredibly popular among You‘s fan base, giving the series even more of an incentive to bring her back for the final season. It’s disappointing that it doesn’t offer a better send-off, especially after season 4.

After Love’s death at the end of You season 3, the fourth outing barely spends time on the fallout of what happened to her. Joe gives viewers a quick recap at the beginning, but Love hardly haunts him. You season 4 only has one Love Quinn cameo, which is surprisingly minor after all she and Joe go through in seasons 2 and 3.

Rather than fixing season 4’s limited focus on Love, it feels like season 5 leans into it.

At least You season 4 has the excuse of taking place in another country, which gives Joe a reason to forget about Love. But his return to New York should have gotten the attention of her family — and resulted in more than a social media post — as it’s incredibly suspicious that he’s still alive after the fire. Henry’s involvement in the newest outing also gives You plenty of reasons to keep Love’s presence strong. But rather than fixing season 4’s limited focus on Love, it feels like season 5 leans into it.

For one, while Love is a victim of Joe Goldberg, she’s also a killer herself. While this doesn’t prevent viewers from enjoying her character, it makes it harder to honor her in the same way the series does with Beck. You has to strike a careful balance between acknowledging Love as a victim and glamorizing her character. This could be why she has such a reduced presence after her death.

You season 5 brought things back to the basics by paralleling the tone of season 1, ultimately bringing Joe’s story full circle in the perfect way.

Additionally, having two women at odds with Joe in season 5 — Kate and Bronte — and bringing his story full circle doesn’t leave much room to include Love. The series opts to focus on Beck instead, which makes a better bookend for its narrative, even if both Beck and Love deserve proper send-offs. With You season 5 trying to do so much, though, Love falls to the wayside. It’s frustrating for fans of the character, but it’s also understandable. Fortunately, Love’s death remains among the most memorable of the entire series.
