The None: Noise Rock Outfit Delivers Potent Social Commentary with “At Hope”

Hailing from the UK, The None is a dynamic and uncompromising noise rock band formed in early 2023. The group features a lineup of experienced musicians from notable bands within the alternative scene: Gordon Moakes (formerly of Bloc Party, Young Legionnaire) on bass, Kai Whyte (Blue Ruth, Youth Man) on vocals, Jim Beck (Cassels) on guitar, and Chris Francombe (Frauds) on drums. Their collective experience and shared musical vision have quickly established them as a formidable live act known for their intense and energetic performances.

The band’s sound is characterized by a powerful blend of noise rock ferocity and underlying melody, creating a sound that is both cathartic and thought-provoking. The None have released two self-produced EPs, “Matter” (August 2024) and “Care” (February 2025), which have garnered critical attention and a dedicated following.

Their single, “At Hope,” stands out as a stark and socially charged track. Released in May 2025, the song directly confronts the realities of poverty and the often-dismissive societal attitudes towards those experiencing it. According to the band, the title “At Hope” was inspired by a disturbing proposal from a US senator to replace the term “at risk” when describing impoverished children with “at hope.” The band views this as a prime example of the “toxic neoliberal attitude” that shifts blame onto individuals rather than acknowledging systemic issues contributing to poverty.
