This article contains SPOILERS for Yellowjackets’ season 3 finale!While Yellowjackets’ season 3 finale was able to solve some lingering mysteries from the pilot episode, there are still plenty of unanswered questions to address in season 4. Some of those mysteries have been around since season 1, with the show not giving many more clues to these questions about the wilderness in the time since. Despite now knowing who “Pit Girl” is, who the Antler Queen is during Pit Girl’s death, and how the teens finally find rescue, there are still several big mysteries to solve before Yellowjackets’ teen characters leave the wilderness.
Some wilderness mysteries don’t appear to have as significant a bearing on the Yellowjackets’ adult lives as others, such as why the teddy bear caught fire before Laura Lee’s plane exploded, who “Cabin Guy” was and what happened to him, or who Javi’s “friend” was while he was missing. Meanwhile, some unexplained wilderness details continue to greatly haunt the characters into the present timeline, with one of the biggest examples being Yellowjackets’ mysterious symbol. The symbol carries over between both timelines, but is a detail that would be better addressed while the teens are still out in the wilderness.
The Teens’ Impending Rescue Means Yellowjackets Season 4 Has To Finally Reveal The Symbol’s Meaning
The Symbol’s Origins Still Haven’t Been Revealed
After three seasons, we still don’t know what the real meaning of Yellowjackets’ symbol is. The icon that is found carved onto the cabin’s floorboard and on trees depicts a triangle with various lines and shapes, and is often associated with the supernatural elements of the wilderness. The symbol is still even used as a code among Yellowjackets’ present-day survivors, as it’s an icon of which only they would recognize the true significance.
At the time of writing, Yellowjackets season 4 has still not been officially renewed by Showtime.
However, the show hasn’t given any clues as to what the origin of the symbol is, who carved it into the trees and why, and what the real meaning and purpose of drawing it is. To fully understand that, we’d likely need to meet the people who previously inhabited the cabin, or go back through time to various eras of people who lived in that area of the wilderness before Yellowjackets’ plane crash. Of course, that doesn’t necessarily require actual flashbacks, as Lottie’s connection to the Wilderness could give her visions explaining the symbol’s significance.

Natalie successfully made contact with someone through the satellite phone, which means that the teens could be rescued within a few days. Since the Wilderness will try hard to keep them from leaving, It might finally give them some explanations for the symbol and history of the crash location.

As Callie Discovers Why The Wilderness Wants Her, She Can Also Discover The Symbol’s History
As the flashback to Lottie’s death reveals in the season 3 finale, the Wilderness has a plan for Callie, and believes she’s even stronger and “more” than Shauna. While Shauna being at her lowest point in the present timeline yet has set her up to reclaim her twisted power as the Antler Queen, it’s Callie that the Wilderness wants. However, it’s not a gift that Callie wants to embrace, which is part of why she and Jeff flee their home without telling Shauna where they went.
The Wilderness will likely want to call Callie there, potentially bringing the surviving characters back to the cursed location.
Still, Callie’s relationship with the Wilderness will have to be explored further throughout Yellowjackets season 4. Why It thinks of her as Its “child,” why It sees so much potential in her, and what It even is are all details that Callie’s story can address. While looking for these answers in the present timeline, Yellowjackets could simultaneously reveal more about the symbol and its connection to the Wilderness’ powers in the past timeline before the teens are rescued. After all, the Wilderness will likely want to call Callie there, potentially bringing the surviving characters back to the cursed location.
The Biggest Theories About The Symbol’s Real Meaning Explained
Is It An Omen, Map, Or Symbol Of Protection?

Though Yellowjackets‘ first three seasons haven’t given many clues to its origins, fans of the series have come up with plenty of intriguing theories to explain the symbol’s real meaning. Some theories have speculated that the symbol is actually a map, with certain lines being indicative of mines, tunnels, mountains, and trees around the area. Others claim that Yellowjackets’ symbol could be a symbol in folklore that helps protect those who draw it against sinister spirits or entities.
Another theory about the symbol’s meaning suggests that it could be an omen for death. The symbol notably appeared on the tree where Coach Martinez’ dead body was found, on the floor where Cabin Guy’s corpse was rotting, near the plane that Laura Lee fatally flew in, on the baby blanket intended for Shauna’s stillborn son, and on the ground below Travis’ dead body in the barn. Whether it’s a map, a bad omen, or a symbol of protection, Yellowjackets’ symbol is a mystery that could help explain other pieces of the wilderness’s supernatural puzzle.
