Pearl Revealed That She’s Soft On The Inside
During The Masked Singer season 13 Voices of Olympus: Unmasking of the Gods Night, when Pearl first came out on stage, Jenny declared that she was “immediately getting legend, diva.” Pearl gave a powerhouse performance of “Saving All My Love For You” by Whitney Houston. She began her clue package by seeing her mask for the first time and saying, “Oh my, look at her! She’s so fancy! Just like a pearl, you gotta crack through a pretty tough exterior to find the treasure inside. The same’s been said about me my whole life.”
As Pearl appeared in the ocean, she shared, “Growing up, I’ve always loved performing. But people like me weren’t promised a chance at a big break.” Pearl then walked on a dock and shared, “So I took any gig I could, from discount stores to dive bars, praying that someone would see a pearl of talent within me.” As she said this, she caught a baseball that was thrown to her.
Gretchen began her career by singing for shoppers at Walmart and working as a bartender. The baseball referenced her singing the National Anthem at the historic Game 4 of the 2004 World Series when the Boston Red Sox won after 86 years, even though she was rooting for the opposing team, the St. Louis Cardinals. Gretchen also recorded a version of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” for ESPN.
Pearl went on to say, “Eventually, the world was my oyster, but I’ve never been able to shake that hard exterior.” She opened a pink umbrella as she said this. Pearl then picked up two cherries from a bowl as she sat at a table, and said, “And it’s affected every aspect of my life, especially love.” She looked down sadly as she said this. The cherries referenced the fact that, in 2016, Gretchen released a duet of the song, “The Feeling Never Dies,” with the band Buckcherry.

So, pray for me.” At the end of the clue package, Pearl held a glowing pearl.
After Pearl’s performance, Nick asked her how being Pearl went outside of her comfort zone. She answered, “I can tell you that I’ve never dressed this fancy before. Usually, when I’m on the red carpet, and they ask me what I’m wearing, I say I got it on sale.” Gretchen has said that she shops at Walmart, rather than wear designer clothes.

Pearl Told The Story Of How She Made It Big
During The Masked Singer season 13 Ghostbusters Night, Pearl sang a stunning version of “Don’t Fear the Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult, which showcased her incredible vocal range, and was completely different from her rendition of “Saving All My Love For You” by Whitney Houston. Pearl’s clue package took place in a bar called Treasure Trove.
Pearl began by saying, “You know, everyone’s got a few skeletons in their closet, a few ghost stories, and I’m no exception.” As she swept the floor of the bar, she said, “As a young pearl, I was stuck in a tiny little tide pool off the side of a highway no one’s ever heard of. My home life was rocky to say the least, so I drifted away before I even hit high school.” Gretchen is from the small town of Pocahontas, Illinois, whose population was recorded at 697 in the 2020 census. Her mother was a teen mom, and her father left when she was two years old. By the age of 14, Gretchen worked as a cook and a bartender in local bars.
As Pearl served drinks and wiped down a table, she said, “I found myself, just a kid, tending bar in a hopeless place, serving up drinks with a double barrel at the ready, in case the clientele got crazy.” A Wanted poster with Pearl on it was then shown, which most likely referred to her cover of the classic song, “I Want You to Want Me” from her 2013 cover album, Under the Covers. Pearl continued, “I couldn’t wait to get out. I dreamed about it every day.”
Pearl went on to say, “Until one day, I decided to swim into new waters, launching myself almost by accident into a tidal wave of success.” She was then shown drawing a diagram of a football game strategy. In 2005, Gretchen performed at the Super Bowl XXXIX pre-game show with the Charlie Daniels Band, singing “Here for the Party” and “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.”

As Pearl took the trash out at the bar, she said, “Now, looking back, it’s funny. I appreciate all I learned from that tide pool. It showed me you work hard, show up, and, no matter what, you keep fighting.” A blue neon sign of a crescent moon was then shown outside of the bar. Gretchen has a song called “Crescent Moon.” Pearl concluded by saying, “So all I know is, these days, I ain’t afraid of nothing, especially no ghosts.”
After Pearl’s performance, another clue about her identity was revealed, which was a jacket that said, “Best Seller.” Pearl explained, “Well, I’m a bit of a ghostwriter myself. I know how to put pen to paper.” In 2006, Gretchen wrote a memoir titled, Redneck Woman: Stories from My Life, which was a New York Times bestseller. Gretchen is also a songwriter, and co-wrote her hit song, “Redneck Woman” with country singer-songwriter John Rich, among other songs.

During The Masked Singer season 13 Group B finals on Grand Ole Opry Night, the three remaining contestants, Pearl, Boogie Woogie, and Griffin, opened the show with a rousing rendition of “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)” by Big & Rich. Pearl later sang an impressive version of Dolly Parton’s “Here You Come Again.” She began her performance by saying, “As Dolly says, you’ll never do a whole lot unless you’re brave enough to try.”
Pearl began her clue package by saying, “The biggest stars have performed at the Opry, but there’s one that shines brighter than the rest: Dolly Parton. Like everyone, I was dazzled by her.” A framed photograph of Dolly was then shown. As Pearl held up a party invitation on which she’d checked the yes box to RSVP, she said, “So when I was invited to share the stage with her, you can imagine my first thought: ‘What would I wear?'” Gretchen and Dolly shared the stage at the 2019 CMA Awards, when they opened the show as part of an all-female performance with many other country music stars.
Pearl went on to say, “This designer dumb-dumb showed up to rehearsals with no clue. And turns out, Dolly was wearing the perfect outfit. So when I asked her where she got it, she replied, ‘Don’t worry, honey. I’ve got two of everything. You can have one.'” As Pearl was shown waving on a red carpet, she added, “And, it fit. Pearl concluded her clue package by saying, “And, tonight, I’m singing one of my favorite Dolly songs. One that I believe is a true hidden gem of hers.” A figurine of an angel was then shown. Pearl then said, “Just the idea of her seeing me sing it means the world to me. So, thank you, Dolly, the reigning Queen of the Opry, for inspiring me. Oh, and for the outfit – I’ve still got it!”

After Pearl’s performance, another clue was given about her identity. There was a picture of a strong arm painted on a pair of cowboy boots. Pearl explained, “As a strong woman, there’s nothing I like more than making others feel strong too. In fact, I’ve been quoted as saying that.” Gretchen is known for being a strong woman, especially because of her hit song, “Redneck Woman.”
After the audience and panelists voted, Pearl advanced directly to the Lucky 6, while Griffin and Boogie Woogie fought for the other Group B spot in the Battle Royale. They each sang their own unique versions of “I Had Some Help” by Post Malone ft. Morgan Wallen.
Before the results were announced, Detective Lucky Duck returned to give an important clue about all three finalists. He said, “There is one singer from season 6 that all three Group B finalists have a connection to.” It was Katharine McPhee, who was Banana Split, along with her husband and legendary record producer, David Foster. Katharine sang Gretchen’s song, “Redneck Woman,” on the TV show Smash and on her tour with David.

She began her clue package by saying, “I came into this competition determined to show a side of myself no one has ever seen before. And it’s been wonderful opening up. But–spoiler alert!–while I love her music, I am not Shania Twain.”
Pearl then gave a colossal clue about her identity, which was a giant red flashing sign that said, “ELVIS.” In 2016, Gretchen recorded a duet using Elvis’ vocals from “Merry Christmas Baby” for the album Christmas Duets, which mixed archival Elvis vocal recordings with new vocals by contemporary country and gospel singers.

After her performance, the panelists conducted a 30-second rapid-fire Q&A, Ken asked her if she was Sheryl Crow, and she replied no. He then asked her if it was because she was Madonna, to which she replied, “Ah, come on!” When Ken asked her if she was a gold record holder, Pearl answered, “Ooh! Little better than that!” Gretchen’s first album, Here For the Party, went 5X platinum, while her second album, All Jacked Up, also achieved platinum certification. When Ken asked her last name, Pearl joked, “jam,” as in Pearl Jam. Pearl also revealed that her favorite food was candy.

Pearl later sang an exciting version of “Your Love” by The Outfield.
Pearl began her clue package by saying, “I must say the soundtrack to my life recently has been love songs. And that’s because I’ve been helping my daughter plan her dream wedding to a really good guy. Wanna meet him? Go easy on him now.” Gretchen’s daughter, Gracie Frances Penner, was born on November 9, 2000. Her father is Gretchen’s ex-boyfriend Mike Penner. She’s an artist, videographer, photographer, and editor in Nashville. She got married in 2024.
Pearl’s son-in-law then gave some clues about her, while wearing a mask and with his voice disguised. He said, “Thanks, Ma! Oh, it feels good to finally call you that. Let me tell you, there was no scarier moment in my life than asking Pearl for her daughter’s hand in marriage. I even chickened out the first time. She’s one tough oyster to crack.” Pearl flexed her bicep and pointed to it as he said this.
