Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and SpongeBob SquarePants may seem like an odd pairing, but Paramount+’s new ad proves it could work. With their Super Bowl ads and other promotions, Paramount+ has found some fun and creative ways to advertise its catalog of content, but their most recent ad just became my favorite. With the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 set to premiere this summer, Paramount+ has been pulling out all the stops to get fans excited, from stunning character posters to sneak peeks and trailers.

The official Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 trailer teased more zany adventures for Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and his Starship Enterprise crew, continuing the genre-bending trends from the first two seasons. Strange New Worlds has already become must-watch television for me, but the hilarious crossover with SpongeBob (Tom Kenny) and his friends makes me even more excited for the show’s third season. As a millennial who grew up watching SpongeBob SquarePants, this particular ad feels perfectly geared toward people like me, and I absolutely loved it.

Paramount+’s Star Trek & SpongeBob Crossover Works Better Than It Has Any Right To

The Patrick Starship Enterprise: Boldly Going Where No Starfish Has Gone Before

Paramount+’s new commercial mixes Star Trek and SpongeBob together in incredibly fun and unique ways, from a giant Patrick Starship to a shell phone to appearances from Sandy Cheeks (Carolyn Lawrence), Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown), and SpongeBob himself. Even the star clusters surrounding the ship are in the shape of the underwater flowers scattered throughout Bikini Bottom. On the Patrick Starship Enterprise, Captain Christopher Pike, Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck), and Ensign Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) treat their underwater friends as new crew members.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 features a huge cast of beloved USS Enterprise crew members and fan favorite guest stars confirmed.

Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Celia Rose Gooding keep straight faces throughout the ad, making the whole thing even funnier. I didn’t know I needed to hear Pike say “commence nautical nonsense” into a shell phone in his most serious captain’s voice, but it definitely put a smile on my face. The ship’s alarm being Patrick (Bill Fagerbakke) shouting “wee woo, wee woo” is another hilarious highlight. But the ad’s best moment comes at the very end when Spock suggests the whole scenario may have been Uhura’s “imagination,” replicating one of SpongeBob’s most iconic moments, complete with rainbow effect and Vulcan salutes.

Paramount+’s Star Trek & SpongeBob Crossover Makes Me More Excited For Strange New Worlds Season 3

Paramount+ Has Some Incredibly Creative & Talented People Behind The Scenes

While I don’t expect to see “SpongeRobert” join the crew of the Starship Enterprise anytime soon, this Paramount+ ad does make me more excited for the upcoming season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The level of detail and care that went into this ad not only shows an obvious knowledge of both Star Trek and SpongeBob, but also a strong sense of creativity. In its first two seasons, Strange New Worlds has already proven its willingness to take big swings and experiment with genres and storytelling styles.

Paramount+’s ad left me feeling simultaneously nostalgic for old-school SpongeBob and excited for the future of Star Trek.

From a musical episode to a crossover with the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks, most of the big risks taken by Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have paid off. Based on what has been revealed so far, the third season looks to be taking even more risks, and while it runs the risk of becoming too much, I have faith that the writers know what they’re doing. I always love seeing two of my favorite fandoms collide, but I had no idea how much fun it would be to see the SpongeBob crew join the cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
