The Office star John Krasinski reacts to the cast of the new reboot series. The American version of The Office arrived in 2005, after the British original ran from 2001 to 2003. It was a star-making vehicle for a number of its actors, including Krasinski, who played Jim. The series has since been adapted for a variety of countries, including a recent Australian version. Now, a new reboot series of The Office is in development with Domhnall Gleeson in the lead role. Other cast members include Melvin Gregg, Chelsea Frei, and Tim Key.
In his interview with ScreenRant for The Fountain of Youth, Krasinksi reacts to Gleeson being cast in The Office spinoff. Krasinski explained how he found out about Gleeson taking on the role, saying that Gleeson was “adorably nervous” to speak with him about it. The Jim actor then went on to encourage Gleeson to take on the part. Krasinski remains supportive, saying he “will be championing from the side.” He also expressed his enthusiasm about any Greg Daniels project. Check out the full quote from Krasinksi below:
ScreenRant: The wonderful Domhnall Gleeson is also taking on The Office Spin-off series. I’m curious how it feels for you, kind of, passing the torch in a way?
John Krasinski: He was so sweet. We were in Cairo when he told me about it, and he was adorably nervous to talk to me about it, and he was like, “I think I might do this thing. What do you think?” And it was a unanimous, “Yes.” Because it’s really one thing, which is Greg Daniels. If Greg Daniels is involved and he’s excited, then get on board, because Greg is the heart and soul of that show. And we all follow Greg anywhere, and still would. I remember he also had worked with Steve [Carrell] on the FX series, and so he wrote to Steve, and Steve said the same thing. We’re all so excited for that show and to see what they’re going to do with it. And it sounds like they made it their own. And I will be championing from the side, for sure.
What This Means For The Office Reboot
Krasinki’s Support Means A Lot
Apart from his connection with the original The Office series, Krasinski might hold a particular soft spot for Gleeson because the two worked together recently. Gleeson and Krasinski star together in the adventure fantasy film Fountain of Youth, which sees a pair of estranged siblings band together to find the titular mystical landmark. The movie is directed by Guy Ritchie and features a leading cast including Gleeson, Krasinski, Natalie Portman, Eiza González, Stanley Tucci, and Laz Alonso. Krasinski and Gleeson’s recent collaboration likely made the former actor even more apt to support the latter.

This support does mean a lot coming from a main cast member in The Office. The original cast members may not be very involved in the spinoff series. As Krasinski says, “they made it their own,” and are doing a new thing with the original concept of the show, rather than putting out any kind of direct remake. As such, it is additionally important that the new cast members of The Office spinoff get support from afar, as they will most likely not be able to act with these original actors on-screen.
Our Take On The Office Reboot Casting
Domhnall Gleeson Has Proven Himself To Be A Great Actor
The Office has some impossible shoes to fill. Boasting iconic performances from actors including Krasinski, Steve Carell, Jenna Fischer, and more, the series original cast is beloved. That said, Gleeson is a worthy actor who has shown off his chops on both the big and small screen. He has also worked with The Office original cast members on multiple occasions, including acting opposite Carell in the intense miniseries The Patient. This will help Gleeson gain influence from The Office stars of yesteryear, to hopefully honor the show’s legacy.
