Warning: Spoilers ahead for Doctor Who season 15, episode 3, “The Well.”The appearance of Anita Dobson’s Mrs. Flood in Doctor Who season 15, episode 3, “The Well,” shows her taking an unusual amount of interest in the device that the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) is using to try and get Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu) back to Earth on May 24, 2025 – but doesn’t explain why she wants to know about it. As one of the most mysterious members of the Doctor Who season 15 cast, Dobson’s presence permeates Gatwa’s second run as the Doctor, and deepens the enigma surrounding her after a minimal role in the Doctor Who season 14 cast.
The Doctor’s Vortex Indictator, which he has playfully renamed, first appears near the beginning of Doctor Who season 15, episode 2, “Lux,” which is set immediately after the end of “The Robot Revolution.” Its function is to calibrate the TARDIS’ navigational array by zeroing in on the temporal and spatial coordinates required to take Belinda home. It requires landing in multiple eras and locations to be fully effective, which has provided a narrative platform for Fifteen’s adventures with his new companion. Now, it’s clear that Mrs. Flood is aware of the Vindicator and wants to know that it’s working.
Mrs. Flood’s Interest In The Vindicator Suggests She Wants The Doctor & Belinda To Reach May 24, 2025
Earth is gone on May 24, and the Doctor is trying to save it
Mrs. Flood’s cameo at the end of “The Well” reveals she knows about the Doctor’s Vindicator, and declares it to be “very good news” that the device is being utilized. She doesn’t say she’s so relieved, but it’s reasonable to assume that it’s because she knows what the Vindicator can do, which means she’s rooting for the Doctor and Belinda to achieve their goal of reaching Earth on May 24, 2025.
The Earth has been difficult to access before in Doctor Who canon, but it seems like a much more difficult task to rectify the situation this time around.
The Earth is confirmed to have been destroyed at the end of “The Robot Revolution,” even though it was still there when Belinda was taken away by the Robots. The death of the human home world has proven to have had a lasting impact throughout the universe, as supported by the fact that no one has heard of Earth or humans by the time of the far-future setting in “The Well.” The Earth has been difficult to access before in Doctor Who canon, but it seems like a much more difficult task to rectify the situation this time around.
Mrs. Flood’s Vindicator Interest Doesn’t Clear Up Whether She’s Good Or Bad In Doctor Who
Mrs. Flood could still be a villain, rather than an ally
Despite her many cameos, it still hasn’t been revealed whose side Mrs. Flood is on. At times, she seems excited by the Doctor’s presence, whereas she has also come across as both sinister and impartial. Therefore, if it turns out she wants the Doctor and Belinda to successfully reach May 24, it’s impossible to know at the moment what her reasoning for that desire could be. It may be that she wants them to get there and save the world, or that she knows they will also meet their end as the Doctor Who season 15 finale approaches.
